Bulldog is not in public domain
Contrary to popular belief, "Chesty" the official USMC bulldog mascot is
a licensed property. Created in 1979 by Diann Wall-Wilson, "Chesty" was
adopted by the Department of the Navy, Headquarters United States Marine
Corps as their official mascot. Upon copyright approval in 1983 the USMC
Bulldog became a licensed property.
Incorporated on over 150 products and sold on Marine Corps base
exchanges in San Diego and Camp Pendleton, the United States Marines
Corps Bulldog is one of the most recognizable military logos on the
market today. Products include adult & children clothing, pewter mugs,
key chains, ornaments, money clips, magnets, shot glasses, candle jars,
watches, puzzles, luggage tags, dog tags, Dacra Glass products and
postcards.
